Light Sensitivity & Visual Comfort

Bright lights, screens and visually busy environments should not make everyday life feel overwhelming.

Light sensitivity and visual discomfort can occur for many reasons. Lynn Family Vision evaluates how the visual system responds to light, screens, motion and other visual demands to help determine appropriate next steps.

UNDERSTANDING THE SYMPTOM

What Is Light Sensitivity?

Light sensitivity is discomfort or difficulty tolerating certain lighting conditions. For some patients it may involve sunlight or fluorescent lighting, while others struggle more with screens, glare, movement or visually complex environments.

The goal is not simply to make everything darker. It is to better understand what visual conditions trigger symptoms and whether the visual system may be contributing.

COMMON EXPERIENCES

When Visual Environments Become Uncomfortable

Patients often describe more than simple brightness sensitivity.

Sensitivity to bright or fluorescent lighting

Headaches triggered by visual activity

Difficulty in grocery stores or crowded environments

Glare intolerance

Discomfort with computer or phone screens

Eye strain or visual fatigue

Visual motion sensitivity or dizziness

Feeling visually overwhelmed or overloaded

WHY IT HAPPENS

Light Sensitivity Can Have Different Causes

Eye & Ocular Causes

Dry eye, ocular surface issues, inflammation and other eye conditions can contribute to discomfort.

Neurological Causes

Migraine, concussion and other neurological conditions can change tolerance for light or visual stimulation.

Functional Visual Stress

Some patients struggle most during sustained screen use, motion or visually demanding environments.

Evaluation

Looking Beyond Brightness Alone

Our evaluation considers symptoms, medical history, visual demands and how the visual system functions under different conditions.

When appropriate, we may also assess eye movements, fixation, visual processing, motion sensitivity and other neuro-visual functions to determine whether broader visual dysfunction may be contributing.

SUPPORTIVE TECHNOLOGY

For select patients experiencing light sensitivity, screen intolerance or visual overload, Calm & Clear may be considered as an adjunctive visual-support option.

The lenses are designed to filter specific wavelengths of light while maintaining a more natural visual environment than simply making everything darker.

THE GOAL

More Comfortable Everyday Vision

The goal is not simply to reduce brightness. It is to improve tolerance for the visual environments that matter in everyday life—screens, work, school, driving, stores, outdoor light and other visually demanding situations.
